Community data guidance

A practical guide for submitting useful food entries.

SimpleCalories follows the same basic pattern used by many community food databases: the app and its users can contribute entries, while the service may review, edit, approve, reject, or remove them.

What you may submit

You may submit a food or menu item when you have a reasonable, lawful basis for entering the information. Useful sources include a package you have in front of you, a restaurant's current menu, or your own measurement. Enter the nutrition facts and serving information as facts, in your own words where practical.

Manual entry is not a free pass

Reading a public menu and typing its factual nutrition values yourself is generally different from copying a site's page, database, photos, or branding. Manual entry does not override a website's terms of use, access restrictions, copyright in original descriptions, or database rights. Do not bulk-copy, scrape, bypass controls, or paste long marketing text.

For a restaurant or manufacturer, a safe entry normally uses the brand and item name only to identify the food, plus the relevant serving and nutrition facts. Do not upload logos or menu photos, claim sponsorship, or suggest that the business reviewed or endorsed the entry.

Source and quality checklist

  • Prefer a package label, official menu, or first-hand measurement.
  • Record the serving basis accurately: serving size, grams or millilitres, and calories.
  • Use the current source date when the value can change, such as a seasonal menu.
  • Do not guess allergens, ingredients, or micronutrients. Leave unknown values blank or explain the uncertainty.
  • Do not submit duplicates, promotional copy, private information, or content copied from another database.

Review and corrections

New entries can remain pending while they are reviewed. Administrators may normalize names, correct formatting, ask for clarification, approve, reject, merge, or remove an entry. An approved entry is still community information, not a guarantee that a brand or provider has verified it.

If you find an error or a rights concern, use in-app Report on the catalog entry where the App provides it, or email victorchung2013@gmail.com with the item name, what should change, and a source or explanation. Repeated reports can hide an entry while we investigate. We may also hide or remove an entry after an administrator review.

Important: Food information is for general wellness tracking, not medical advice. Check the current label or menu for allergy, medical, religious, or other safety-critical decisions.

These guidelines supplement the Terms of Service. If they conflict, the Terms control.
